چکیده

Recent technological advances in computer, high-speed network, and data compression are accelerating the realization of media-on-demand (MOD) systems. In this paper, we investigate issues involved in the design of a distributed server to support MOD application. We describe Eager Pipelining Policy which utilizes resources, that are otherwise unused, to improve system performance. Eager Pipelining can be employed when the available bandwidth along the path from a source to a user exceeds the display bandwidth requirement of a referenced continuous media object. In this case, the policy will utilize disk and memory buuers of the intermediate nodes to deliver the object to the user eeciently.

Simple Continuous Media Storage Server on Real-Time Mach

This paper presents the design and implementation of a simple continuous media storage server: CRAS on Real-Time Mach. CRAS is a specially optimized storage system for retrieving multiple continuous media streams such as audio and video from a disk at constant rates for small scale distributed multimedia systems. Many previous continuous media storage servers have focussed on high throughput fo...

Continuous Routing in Packet Switchesmiltos

Considering continuous routing, we analyze the transient behavior of n n routers with input buuering, split input buuering, output buuering, and central buuering with dedicated virtual circuits, one for each source-destination pair in a network. Assuming similar buuer space requirements, output buuering has the highest throughput. Split input buuering and central buuering have comparable perfor...

Bu er Management Policy for an On - Demand

In an on-demand video server environment, multimedia objects (e.g. movies) are very large and are read sequentially. Hence it is not economical to cache the entire object. However, caching random fractions of a multimedia object is not beneecial. This is due to the stringent response time requirements where continuous availability of a stream has to be guaranteed; whereas caching random fractio...

Optimizing Continuous Media Delivery by Multiple Distributed Servers to Multiple Clients using a Genetic Algorithm

In this paper we explore the potential of a VoD system that is based on a paradigm that has been recently proposed: that of combining many distributed servers to handle the delivery of each requested media. When faced with a system comprised of N servers and M clients, the problems to be addressed are: (i) how to split the delivery task among different servers and (ii) how to pair clients and s...
